I am not a number, a digital bar-code
to be swiped by state machinery
granted public services only if
I allow the state to control me,
electronically followed by Big Blunkett,
mentally manipulated into silence.
I am a person, an entity free
of the state that invades my privacy.
My identity cannot be owned
by a card that contains my DNA
except by reducing me
to a fraction of my reality.
I am not a person to be pigeon-holed,
no matter how hard they try.
My identity is not a specimen,
to be skewered like a butterfly.
I need to be me, to be free,
to express myself without fear.
I see a bleak future if our identities
are logged, like products to buy,
to be controlled by power freaks.
I refuse to be fixed by their stare,
to be examined by guardians of the state,
for who will guard the guards?
